Seminar “Cultural codes in music: contexts, symbols, universalies” (“Cognitive musicology”)
On Monday, June 17, at 4:00 pm, a seminar entitled “Cultural codes in music: contexts, symbols, universalies” (the cycle “Cognitive musicology”) was be held in the White Hall of the Russian Institute for the History of Arts.
The problem of understanding and interpreting the artifacts of alien culture is somehow related to the ability of understanding its cultural code. How cultural codes appear in music – in the creation, interpretation of the performer, the listener’s perception, how a new field of meanings arises, not conditioned by the cultural code, how other forms of art are involved in the implementation of certain aspects of cultural codes in the musical text – all these issues will be addressed on the material of the classical tradition of Japan (N. Klobukova), the performing art of Mari (E. Tanikova), the contemporary composition (A. Tikhomirova).
Leading – A.A.Timoshenko, PhD, Senior Research Scientist, Department of Organology, RIHA; E.S.Tanikova, performing musician, Research Scientist, Department of Organology, RIHA
