"Folklore, anthropology, ethnography" Seminar workshop: "Maslenitsa: historical roots, song and ritual code"
On Wednesday, March 9 at 16.00 in the White Hall of Russian Institute for Art History, Department of Folklore will present a seminar-workshop: “Maslenitsa: historical roots, song and ritual code” from the series “Folklore, anthropology, ethnography.”
Shrove Tuesday, or Maslenitsa marks an important transition in the cycle of things in nature: on the one hand, it is associated with the outgoing winter, on the other – face the approaching spring. Ritual actions and ritual singing on Shrove Tuesday at the European peoples to protect future crops and harvest, show the ancient roots of this ritual agricultural festival, which is alive to this day.
Authentic materials written from different sources europe wide, ancient ritual roots of Maslenitsa carnival, as well as modern city life of the above tradition will be discussed at this seminar.
