An International Academic Conference
RUSSIAN-FINNISH RELATIONS IN ART AND CULTURE
April 19 – 20, 2017, St. Petersburg, Russia
The Department of Contemporary Art at the Russian Institute of Art History invites all experts in the field of theory and history of art, culture, intercultural communications and those who study the aspects of the Russian-Finnish cultural interactions, to participate in the international conference “Russian-Finnish Relations in Art and Culture” on April 19th -20th 2017 at the Russian Institute for the History of Arts.
During the conference, that will take place in the year of centenary of Finland’s independence, the organizers plan to open an interdisciplinary discussion about the role of art in Finland’s and Russia’s relations from 1917 to 2017, as well as the impact of the Russian-Finnish interactions on both the regional and global art scene.
A century has passed since Finland was part of the Russian Empire as a Grand Duchy and now stands among the most successful EU countries with its own unique national traditions in various art forms – literature, music, architecture, design, cinematography, fine arts, photography and video-art. To what extent did the period of being part of the Russian Empire contribute to this?
What was the influence of the Russian immigrants in the development of the Finnish national art and how did the artists of the Grand Duchy of Finland effect the art in Russia? What does the geographical proximity bring to the artistic processes?
