On Monday 16 May at 14.00 at White Hall of Russian Institute for Art History, Department of Fine Arts and Architecture [RIAH] holds a seminar “The resurrection as a theme in art and architecture” of the series “Zubov reading cycle”. Holy Resurrection – Easter – the most important holiday of Christianity. For all its importance for the Orthodox culture up to this day, a number of important issues related to the reflection of this development in art are still actual and has not withdrawn. The main range of problems – the iconographic order. The meaning of the image sign is often unclear, thus the question arises whether it is possible to show Resurrection as it has been known from the scriptures or portrayed always another event – the descent into hell. Finding an answer requires address to the peculiarities of interpretation of the icon, as well as to the ways of its composing. In addition, if at least the impossibility of transmission of an event are suspected by means of painting, so it is likely, in the foreground can act architecture with its specific resources arsenal. So on this component of the Resurrection issue it is also worth paying attention to.

Reports are planned during the workshop:

  • Svetlana Ivanova: The Resurrection iconography in the Byzantine and Russian art: tradition and interpretation
  • Petr Ershov: The Jerusalem theme in ancient architecture
  • Ivan Sablin: The motive of the rotunda in the architecture of the Christian West
