LIVES AND CAREERS OF ARTISTS AT THE TURN OF THE 20TH AND 21ST CENTURIES

The Department of Contemporary Art at the Russian Institute of Art History invites sociologists of art, art historians, cultural studies specialists, anthropologists, economists, philosophers, and psychologists of art to “Lives and Careers of Artists at the Turn of the 20th and 21st Centuries,” an international scholarly conference that will take place on November 7–8, 2016, at the Russian Institute of Art History in St. Petersburg, Russia. The organizers envision the conference as a platform for an interdisciplinary discussion of the place of artists and the artistic professions in the modern world. Having evolved over the centuries from craftsmen and court servants to scholars, geniuses, and popular idols, professional artists nowadays often find themselves on the margins of a “creative” consumer culture. Their professions have not only been bent out of all recognition but have also been rapidly vanishing amidst the cultural industries and the current socio-economic challenges of our time.

We will examine the current state of the profession in a variety of art fields, from literature, fine art, music, theater, and cinema to new forms of artistic production still in the midst of professionalization and legitimation.

During the two-day conference, the organizers would like to focus on the following issues:

1. Successful careers in art at the turn of the millennia

2. Theoretical approaches and methods of studying the careers of contemporary artists

3. Artists and the market: from ideology to economic diktat

4. The role of cultural mediators and institutions in the lives and careers of artists

5. Family and gender as factors in professional change

6. Regional features in the careers of contemporary artists

7. Recruitment and education in the development of contemporary artists

8. Artists and audiences in an age of creative consumerism

9. Societal censorship and its role in the lives of artists

10. Current mechanisms for engaging artists

11. The role of commodification and culture industries in the lives and careers of artists

12. Cross-cultural communication in the lives and careers of art workers

13. Artists and current religious culture

14. Russian artists abroad: strategies for adaptation and self-identification

15. The role of cultural, ethic, and national identity in the careers of artists
