Conference "The Scientific Heritage of Valentin Moshkov in the Light of Nowadays"
On Monday, October 16, the Department of Folklore, RIHA was holding a conference “The Scientific Heritage of Valentin Moshkov in the Light of Nowadays”, timed to the 165th anniversary of the birth of an ethnologist, folklorist, philosopher Valentin Moshkov (1852-1922). Russian nobleman, artillery officer, member of the Russian Geographical Society, author of scientific works on ethnography, philology, folklore, ethnomusicology, V.A.Moshkov is a large-scale figure in Russian science, however completely underestimated to the present day.
The persona of V.A.Moshkov, a graduate of St. Petersburg educational institutions, a scientist with such diverse talents and outstanding in various science disciplines, is found in many industry directories and reference books: domestic writers, Turkologists, ethnographers, folklorists, musicologists. These data are often scattered and sketchy, sometimes inaccurate. V.Moshkov’s multi-vector scientific activity is one of the tendencies of European art and science at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His legacy is very voluminous and completely not yet covered by modern scientific consciousness.
The works written by him, which are demonstrating their relevance even today, at the beginning of the XXI century, should take their rightful place in the scientific and educational fields, as well as in the history of Russian science.
We hope that the planned conference will be a tribute to the memory of the outstanding personality and multifaceted activity of V.A.Moshkov.
