Round table «Graphic design: between modernism and mass culture»

On Wednesday, November 7, at 12:00 Department of Arts and Architecture, Russian Institute for the History of Arts was present a round table «Graphic design: between modernism and mass culture», which will take place in the Green Hall of the Institute. The influence of modernism on popular culture (advertising, fashion, commercial graphic design) is one of the most pressing and at the same time poor-studied issues. This concerns both the direct participation of modern artists in the creation of design objects (the famous LP discs envelope design for the “The Beatles” made by English pop art masters), and the influence of modernist ideas on professional design environment which are far from contemporary art. Does modernism – in its most complex and radical forms – have commercial potential? How does its nature change and what happens to the mass culture itself? The round table is devoted to these and other issues
