International Scientific Conference "Issues of the formation and existence of local bell-ringer and church-singing schools"

On Wednesday, October 23, the International Scientific Conference “Issues of the Formation and Existence of Local Bell-Ringer and Church Singing Schools” was be held in the Russian Institute for the History of Arts, White Hall.

Currently, church singing, bells and bell ringing are becoming part of everyday life anew. They sound at churches, cathedrals, monasteries, as well as in concert halls. In addition to the canonical functioning in liturgical practice, within the framework of the established principles of musical and instrumental organization of traditional bell ringing are currently used for individual creativity and secular performance.

The tasks and objectives of the conference have to examine the most important traditions of bell-ringing practice and church singing that have historically developed and come down to us, to discuss the issues of studying the past and present Russian campanology with close attention to the issue of transmitting performing traditions and training bell ringers, to identify new approaches to the phenomenon of contemporary bell culture. The conference is attended by campanologists, ringer, musicologists, historians.

The principal conference trends are as follows:

  • Historical and cultural phenomenon of the bell.
  • Regional specificity of bell ringing.
  • Church and singing schools and their influence on bell instrumentalism.
  • Instrumentalism of bell culture.
  • Transfer of practical experience of bell performance.
  • Historical sound ideal of bells and bells.
  • The sound world of bells in traditional and academic music.
