The international research symposium

“The ecology of music. soundscapes: church, monastery, city”

Human life force is expressed by voice, and their dwelling place is surrounded by the walls of houses; thus, the fact and the purpose of human existence are expressed. The architecture of the invisible (sound and light) and the visible architecture are connected by reflections and echoes, and the walls of an architectural object can be considered as resonators of a giant musical instrument. It is for this reason that ancient Greeks built special spaces, called odeia, intentionally arranging the architectural acoustic environment. As early as in 1650, A. Kircher said in his Musurgia Universalis that sound is similar to light and is a geometric emanation of its source, thus laying the foundation of an ecologic approach to musicology and the research of soundscapes.

The problem range of our symposium is connected with musical acoustic space of religious architecture – sound and light, the symbolism of insulating by sound and preservation of silence.
