Mikhail Tolstoi lecture: «Round the Noces : the centenary of the some writing»

On Monday, February 15 at 13.00 in White Hall of Russian Institute for Art History, Mikhail Nikitich Tolstoi will present his lecture: «Round the Noces : the centenary of the some writing», as a part of the seminar series «Russian and world art history: the history and prospects for cooperation». Mikhail Tolstoi is an associate research scientist at the Russian Institute for Art History, St.Petersburg as well as a member researcher of the Museum of Russian Culture in San Francisco.

There is a letter, which was found in the archive of the Russian Institute for Art History in 2015. In this letter, V.F. Kibalchich (regent of the Russian church in Geneva) wrote to A. Rimsky-Korsakov about Igor Stravinsky “Noces”. The letter was sent in 1915 from Switzerland to St. Petersburg.

Kibalchich letter of 1915, will be compared with the article he published in 1936, about his participation in the creation and production of “Noces” (at the premiere in Paris in 1923 Kibalchich directed choral part of the work). It is proved that the article is written plausible, but the main points of the article either anachronistic, or simply wrong. The report draws on previously unknown documents: three letters which Stravinsky wrote to Kibalchich and Bertenson, four letters Kibalchich wrote to K. Kovarzhovitsu and a letter Diaghilev wrote to Kibalchich, as well as archival materials from St. Petersburg, Moscow, Arkhangelsk, San Francisco, Prague, Geneva and London.

All are invited to attend.
